Hey everybody!
Just added "Reader Reviews" in the Interviews and Reviews section of the site. It's open to anybody who wants to submit a review about "The God Machine" through their blog. Best and fair ones will be picked. [Blogs like: LJ, Wordpress, Blogspot, Myspace, etc.]
Tips: Make it at "least" 2 paragraphs if you can. Try to be professional and add links back to "spookychan.com/thegodmachine". Talk about the art and the story. Scales 1-5, or 1-10 work nicely. No internet speak!!! [this should go without saying]

The God Machine: Some stores recieving on the 28th
So i've been getting a few reports that some people's comic stores are receiving THE GOD MACHINE next week on the original release day of the 28th. Other stores received the book on it's early release on the 21st. I can't figure out what's up with that, but a little patience my friends in receiving it!
Speaking of which, I heard one report that DCBS.com sending out one person's order of THE GOD MACHINE.
Also! tfaw.com SOLD OUT of The God Machine. Wooo! They'll reorder the book but it will take about 2 weeks for them to get it back in. Luckily I found 2 other sites who are offering The God Machine as well.*
*Please note I’m not connected to these places online, I merely found them for you.
Also, It's beautiful! <3
Thanks to those of you who have told me you have received the book and the beautiful comments! Keep them coming please!

Return of THE GOD MACHINE "Rough Cut Series" -webcomic!
Like the Phoenix, it returns!
The God Machine Rough Cut- after 2 years of hiatus, it springs back into action!
And I'm picking up from where I left off too!
Chapter 3, Page 10
Page 10 Book 3 by ~TheGodMachineComic on deviantART
Confused? New? Forget about everything you once read?
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
But you might be asking, "Chan, why is everything in pencil and written like a weirdo?"
Glad you asked!
Mission Statement Time!
"The Rough Cut Series is meant to be a preview/web comic of my comic series, "The God Machine." It's taking the original scripts and draft pages, and translating them to pencil only comic pages. There are no inks, formal fonts, or even blacked in areas. The idea behind this is to get you into the series before it comes out to print. Now when the comic goes to print media, you'll see the art work polished, inked, proper lettering, extra jokes, re-writes of the script, sometimes re-ordered panel layout, totally new pages, and bonus material. That way if you really like the project, you won't feel gypped that you'd be buying content that's already free online. Think of this as a preview, and a glimpse into the process in how I make comics.
The God Machine is published by Archaia.
The first issue comes out Oct. 28th 2009."
That's it! Welcome back~!
-Chan
p.s. Eventually I try to set up a Comic Press thing on my web site, but currently I don't have the time for that. So DA will have to do for now. I don't feel like uploading to Comic Space anymore. :(

A week later, and finally recovering from Dragon*con!
Sorry this took so long, but I've been on a secret project this past week, and finalizing some last minute touches to a certain book~!
Dragon*con was a blast! For my first time behind the table there I was pleasantly surprised how well received THE GOD MACHINE was, and how adorable you guys are! I tried out "Crazy Crayon Commissions" for the first time, and they were a smashing success! [I will be bringing them back for sure, though at a lil higher price since they broke my hands, ouch!]I also did some pretty niffty commissions that I rather liked.
Even if I was more than 75% at my table, I did get to have adventures! I saw my friend Doc Hammer's band, Weep, perform, saw the Venture Brothers panel, talked to people at Rusty's Day Camp about how i make comics, and LOTS of drinking happened on the first day [oops!].
I got to see many of my friends and make new ones too! I met Peter Steigerwald [hyper cool colorist and illustrator over at Aspen] and the very cool McCartney! [also met tons of other people too!] Also saw my friends David Petersen, and Jeremy Bastian~! Not to mention the ever cool, and always amazing DRD [who, without I'd be lost.]
Course I had my beautiful husband, Jim, my best friend Laura, and Misha to help me with my booth when I couldn't be there and needed someone to keep me company. I don't think I could have done it without them! <3
So that's it for now! Playing catch up and working hard now.
I've also uploaded tons of photos to my facebook account [visible to all, if not yell at me and i'll upload them to some other spot.]
More news later~ lots coming up!!

For Comic Vine~
Well hello Comic-Viners!
Wait, you probably don't call yourself that do you?
At any rate, hello everybody!
For those of you who do not know me, I'm Chandra Free, creator of the upcoming Archaia title, "THE GOD MACHINE." [The 1st issue is coming out this Oct. 28th]
Ms. Sara 'Babs' Lima asked me if I'd come and share with you guys my process & art work, and I was more than happy to accept! So expect more from me in the future!
But enough with the introductions - shall we get into the art?
For my first entry, I'm sharing with all of you THE GOD MACHINE's first graphic novel cover. [Graphic novel to come out the first quarter of 2010.]
For this particular cover I wanted to convey the feeling of the first 5 chapters of THE GOD MACHINE effectively. I took different and weird approaches to figuring out what would be best suited to do this. Like a fool, I tried "method arting" [think "Method acting" only with art.] I attempted to put myself in the mindset of my lead character, Guy Salvatore, who is a depressed 17-year old. I pulled out my old, crappy alternative CD's from my late teen years, put them on, and then tried to set "the mood" that would trigger inspiration! I failed miserably! [Like super fail!] I was in a rather good mood at the time, and there was no changing that, or "inspiring" me. With a surprise 4-day deadline approaching, I knew I had to figure out something for this cover that showed something about THE GOD MACHINE in the right light and in a hurry! So I went ahead and did what I do best - sit down, and draw extemporaneously!
I started with a Photoshop sketch.
I wasn't totally digging it, but it was a good start, and it had motion. I didn't think it was anything special, but I went with it anyway. Now, the unfortunate thing is [or fortunate in this case] was that I didn't save my last bit of work on the sketch, and lost all that work. This frustrated me. The image wasn't jiving, and work had been wasted. So I decided to scrap this image, and try a more traditional approach. Another day wasted.
The next day I got out some Blue Line comic book paper, and took the same approach. Strange that this worked. Typically, when using comic paper, I have a thumbnail of what I want to put down on the paper. Though I had done an odd sketch that you can barely make out in my sketch book that barely resembles what I ended up doing. This was a rather strange piece for me. But, I go with what works!
After an hour or so, I finally had my pencils. Well it might have been longer, time seems to fly when I draw, and I tend to never pay attention to how long. Who knows, it could have been 3 hours?
I originally drew this with the intention of having Guy at the bottom of the image, and Good God [the female obviously] at the top. I wanted to put the logo at the bottom to try something different. But, it didn't work as well as I thought it would, so I flipped the image. That worked out much better!
[It bares mentioning that I wanted an image that had a similar theme to what I had done for the cover of the first issue of THE GOD MACHINE.]
[This is the cover THE GOD MACHINE issue that's coming out in October.]
This is in keeping with that same idea of Guy Salvatore and Good God with a yin and yang kind of theme.
I took my pencils directly into Photoshop, and cleaned up and adjusted the levels to make them pop, and give them that "inked look." [I don't do inking, it drives me nuts!] I also use a Photoshop action my husband made for me that separates the lines from the digital canvas. It's easier to work with your line art with transparenies and solid lines. [You can also change the color of the line art this way too through layer options!]
Now I place down some basic colors.
Notice how I'm building up colors on top of my canvas' main color. I want some of the canvas color to come through parts of my image so we have the same general feel throughout. Though I'm a sucker for letting Good God's hair be untouched by any other colors, which will prove to be a challenge through this piece to make that work with our color scheme.
Next I put in a texture behind our characters and start fleshing out some more details.
Notice I start thinking of light sources, and taming the ugly base colors on that moon. [That moon was driving me crazy!]
Now I start really getting into the details, and adding what has been dubbed my "trademark" abstract elements. [Or so people tell me!]
I've added more shading here and there to our characters. Now there's also a splash of faint opaque red outside of Good God's hair. This helps integrate the reds in her hair to other parts of the image, helping it fit in with the rest of the color scheme. This also adds some more visual interest as well.
Following this, I take my first stab at finishing the image.
After more details have been placed, I lay down THE GOD MACHINE logo, and add the appropriate glows and shadows so it stands out. But there's something not quite right about this image. It looks done, and I'm ahead of of my deadline, so what could be wrong? It only took me a day to construct it, so maybe I'm rushing things. Sure I'm excited it's close, but that moon seems way too overpowering and dragging our eye out towards the left. [A big no-no!] Also the colors don't seem like they vary enough.
The solution: come in with some faint opaque greens, place it on the moon to tone it down, and put the green on our characters and other spots.
This gives it a little more balance, another level of shading, and just a better feeling overall!
Now this is the version I turned in to Archaia a few days ahead. I'm content enough with it, but I know I could do better.
Now the deadline wasn't the official deadline for the graphic novel material. It was actually so the graphic novel's cover could be featured in THE GOD MACHINE special.
So now I've had time to think on what bothers me about this image, and I've gone back and gave it exactly what it needed! [Trust me, I didn't pull a "Lucas." ;)]
First thing- that bloody moon! It's never behaved right for me.
I take out that nasty yellow, and replace with a bright shiny white! This proves more illuminating and adds an energy into the image, making our characters pop more.
I also go back to the line art layer and change its color from a black to a more dark red-brownish color, giving the lines a softer and more natural feel. I also add more little abstractions, and voilĂ ! Finished!
The piece now has a more vibrant energy and pizazz! [Least I think so.]
So if you guys happen to pick up THE GOD MACHINE special preview book, you'll be getting the alternate version of this cover inside, along with bio pages, and the first full chapter of THE GOD MACHINE!
Well, I hope you guys enjoyed that!
See you again with more art!
-Chandra

1 WEEK to Order GOD MACHINE, Dragon*con + Interviews
You only have one week left to order The God Machine!!! Ask your local comic book shop to order it, or get it over at DCBS
Remember it's VERY important, [and it'll always be important] to PRE-ORDER THE GOD MACHINE with your local comic shop! It informs my publisher there is a need for my book [you know, so they keep me on for later books etc.] and also informs Diamond Distributors that it's something they want to keep solicited. It also tells them how many books to print, and also if you order through your comic shop they'll ACTUALLY have it there!!! Remember kids, I have an indy book, and comic shops don't naturally pick up these titles because they are more riskier to sell than say your Marvels and DCs. If you don't do this now, or for future books, there might not be a GOD MACHINE at your store. [this applies to all indy comics btw.]
It's a hard industry, and there is a reason why a lot of titles don't make it. It's really up to you guys to be proactive! [I know, I'm not much of a proactive person myself.. it sucks!]
AUGUST 31st is your deadline!! Go order THE GOD MACHINE: Preview!!!!
**********
Dragon*con is FASTLY approaching!! Sept 4-7th in Atlanta, GA.
I'll have prints, mini comics, commissions, stickers and other goodies! If there is a particular piece you'd like to see as a print, please tell me! [my gallery for choices]
I can't wait to see you guys!!
**********
More interviews!!!

And a new Interview over at CBR:

SDCC 2009, the aftermath of Epicness!
And so... another Comic-con has come and gone. What a delightful time it was too! I saw many of my dear friends & colleagues [some whom I only knew online], connected with fans, and added to my collection of hyper cool convention stories.
It must be said, that the Archaia group is just amazing. I love all of those guys so much. Even with a restructuring, it's still the same family. From our creators, to our staff, to our lovable interns- there's so much to love!
I have to keep this brief due to the fact that writing is hard on the hands.
The panel I was on, was a surprising success! I wish there was video of the first half with Nick Tapalansky & Alex Eckman-Lawn [Awakening], Josh Fialkov [Tumor] , and myself [The God Machine], but sadly no one has found this yet. :(
After all of us we're done, Zachary Quinto and his production company “Before the Door Pictures,“ came on to present their 2 new books, Mr. Murder is Dead and Lucid. [Which they are doing with Archaia.]
After they presented their books it was time for Q&A... uh oh! ^_~
All questions were for Quinto and Co.... minus one. A dear sweetie, by the name of Kat, who is a fan of mine did the ballsy-est things I've ever seen. She did not ask “Before the Door” guys anything, but her question was pointed towards me! I had no earthly clue til that moment. I was floored! Mr. Stephen Christy [Archaia] encouraged me to come up and answer in front of everybody. This also happened to be the perfect opportunity to give Mr. Quinto my little print of Spock
SPOCK by =SpookyChan on deviantART
So before I took the question I gave the print, and turned to take the question. You can see it all here-
[I come in at about 4:40 mn]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70scvTkB1sA
Anyways, as you can tell I was very dorky. But no one said I was a good speaker, I just make pretty pictures and write stories away from the public. It was super cool to meet Mr. Quinto that way. [I adored him as Spock, since i'm a big Star Trek fan throughout, hence my answer.]
A big thanks to Kat for getting up there, and making my convention a memorable one! -You rock girl!
Other bits of news, me best matey, Mr. Patrick McEvoy did some interviews at SDCC for the incredible “Ninja Mountain Podcast”, which features yours truly, and featuring Steranko, Alex Eckman-Lawn, Dave Rodriguez, Mark Smylie, etc. Go listen to it! [pst! This link is a direct link to the show]
*also I apologize for being so giggly and inapt at talking... did I mention I don't get out much?
ALSO! The biggest announcement to come out of this trip, was to find out that OFFICIALLY my book, “The God Machine,” is coming out this October!
ORDER IT! [pretty, pretty, pretty please!!!!!]
THE GOD MACHINE- PreOrder by =SpookyChan on deviantART
[see image, and under it for more info]
More follow ups on this to come!
Last, but not LEAST!
DRAGON*CON!! Sept 4-7th! I'll be a guest. Come see me please!
Also I have 2 tickets for sale [both are for 4 days , @ $100 a piece] I need to sell these!!! I bought them before I knew i'd be a guest. :( If anybody is interested contact me at witchycrankypoo@gmail.com – I accept paypal. This is the going rate for tickets right now. But you'd be helping me out if you purchased them from me!
Thanks guys!!
I think that's it... I wish I could go into all the wonderful moments and all the incredible friends and talent I got to pal around with. But this will have to do.
Thanks to all who stopped by, bought a print, mini-comic, or just stopped by to chat!
Also, a few photos over at myspace.
Love you guys!

Titanium Rain needs your help! + Primordia, TGM, cons?
Hey guys!
Dunno if you've heard, but the super sexy and amazing, "Titanium Rain," is coming back to the comic stands again!
ORDER CODE: JUNE09 0698
I can't begin to recommend this book enough! [from amazing art, to a stellar story! -and it's not even a genre i'm into, but it completely had me wrapped around it's mastery of telling a damn fine story!]
So here's what i'm asking~
TITANIUM RAIN NEEDS YOUR HELP!
One of the problems that face the industry, is that most of the time comic stores don't know what's coming out, and can overlook an amazing book like this one and primarily stick to regular DC and Marvel books.
With the economy as bad as it is, stores are scaling back too! Even more reason why they may NOT carry Titanium Rain! :(
So the brilliant Josh Finney & Kat Roacha [creators of Titanium Rain] need your help with getting comic stores to order Titanium Rain-
It's pretty simple really-
That's it! You have less than 2 weeks to get the word out. I believe in you guys- even if money is tight, we just need to get the word out!
----------------
Also! [and the same goes for this as well]
Order the first hard bound graphic novel of Primordia as well!!
(which is not only a kick ass book, but also features one of my pin-ups as well!)
Preview order code - JUN09 0695
--------------
There are so many other things going on. Currently [if you didn't read under my latest image over at Deviant Art, ]
My book, The God Machine, has been put on hold again, due to minor complications. It's looking like October might be it's new release, but not totally sure yet.
But i'm trying my best to try to have the book out for SDCC [which i'll be there!] and at LEAST for Dragon*con..... Did I just say Dragon*con? hmmm yes i did. Waiting for the official word on that one....
That's it for now.
Love you guys!
-chan <3
p.s. Did I happen to make a phone call to the Ninja Mountain podcast? Perhaps so...! [regardless, always an amazing podcast to listen to! Even when i'm not being silly! right Patrick?]
p.s.s. Don't forget Awakening needs love too!
Dunno if you've heard, but the super sexy and amazing, "Titanium Rain," is coming back to the comic stands again!

1. Go to a local store (or two)!
2. Tell the store owner you want your copy of Titanium Rain #1!
3. The owner will want to know who publishes the book, and what IT"S PREVIEWS CODE is. You say:
Titanium Rain is on page 191 of the Previews catalogs, ORDER CODE: JUNE09 0698.
Then add:
Titanium Rain is published by Archaia Studio Press, the company who does MOUSE GUARD.
This last bit is important because it tells the store owner we're published by a legit company, and will also increase the chance of the store ordering more copies.
Love you guys!

p.s. Did I happen to make a phone call to the Ninja Mountain podcast? Perhaps so...! [regardless, always an amazing podcast to listen to! Even when i'm not being silly! right Patrick?]
p.s.s. Don't forget Awakening needs love too!

but best let Mr. Nick [Tapalansky] explain this one!
Nick Tapalanksy says [writer of Awakening ]:
AWAKENING Volume One is being solicited in April Previews (comic shop ordering magazine)! It’s alllllll set for it’s June release and we couldn’t be more excited. Check out the Awakening album for some sweet previews.
Now the first step in our multi-pronged effort to throw ourselves in the faces of as many people as possible begins. We’re working with a limited time frame, so any help you guys can give would be appreciated more than you know. :)
The deadline for initial order cut-offs from comic shops is incredibly short this month. While they can place re-orders later, if you want to guarantee that the shop will get the book in on the day it’s released, you’ll need to stop in no later than April 11th. To make it super easy for everyone, Alex and I have created a coupon with all our Previews info on it. We've posted it up in our gallery - direct link is below!
Don't worry, it only looks big (that's what she said) - it prints at 4"x6" and won't kill any ink cartridges.
Just print that sucker out, give it to the shop along with your name and phone number, and away you go! If you need help finding a local shop, visit the Comic Shop Locator.
In the event that you don’t have a local comic shop, don’t panic! As soon as the book is available for pre-order through bookstores (Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc.) or online comic shops I’ll be posting links and a second coupon you can bring to said stores.
In the meantime, please pass this along to friends, family, and loved ones who might be interested in a little existential horror/noir to brighten their day... They can find out more about the book by visiting our MySpace or my deviantART page.
Likewise, if you’ve got a blog or an online presence (website, MySpace, Facebook, etc.) and dig the book, please please please help us spread the word. Post the coupon up for download, sing our praises, talk about how handsome Alex , Thomas , and I are, you know… the usual.
Thanks again everybody for all the support you’ve given us so far! We couldn’t have gotten to this point without all of you and we hope you know how much that means to us.
We love you.

NYCC 09, and the small gaggle of photos
Didn't get to take too many photos at NYCC. My hope was to take more on Sunday of my friends, have adventures in NYC on Monday, and take lots of pics with my girls... but sadly my plans were taken over by the sickness. Oh well!
Least I have a lil' something. ^^;

Hey guys!
So NYCC went well, ....well minus getting sick. Oh boy has this been a dozy. I still feel under the weather, and it's been 9 days of me having this beast! It hasn't been pretty.
Anyways thanks to those who made it out to the con, said "hi", picked up some prints, etc.
My trip wouldn't had been anything without my Kim, Cassandra and Niki. They are my girls eternally.
Also had a lot of fun with my Archaia family - Nick, Alex, Dave R. and A. Dave. Also met the new boss man, PJ. Speaking of which, this brings me to good news about The God Machine!
Discussed things with PJ, and we both agreed on a July release date for the first issue of The God Machine to come out. After that the book will probably go straight to graphic novel [to be announced when that will be released.] Which, wow! how exciting is that? My story will do better in a graphic novel format anyways.
Which means, i will be attending SDCC this year, and my book should be released at that show. :)
---------------
Speaking of conventions...
Mega-con!
Feb 27th - March 1st
I’ll be in Artist Alley; Burgundy 8A section. Which is only a few weekends away! I'll be selling a special print not seen in NYCC! [hopefully, if it works out] And i'll have more room to spread out with new stickers and such! So come and see me please!
---------------
Again, updated my web-site, spookychan.com, with links and an extended pic as seen here.
---------------
Notable links:
Go check my dear friend, Patrick McEvoy, [artist of Starkweather, an illustrator for Marvel, plus much more!] and co.[ Jeremy McHugh and Jon Hodgson] have a podcast that I highly recommend! And it's all about art too!
From fantasy art, illustration, and comics!
Their words-
"It's a podcast about art and the business of art, from the point of view of our Deadly Ninja Art Squad."
Ninja Mountain Podcast [they have 3 episodes up]

NYCC, Mega-Con, & The God Machine re-signed!!
So much information to get done, and my hands hurt! >_<
First conventions appearances-
------------------
New York Comic-con
Feb. 6th-8th
Today i got the official word that I will be attending New York Comic-con. No word on when i'll be at the booth, but I will be at the Archaia Studios Press booth [i think, I couldn't find Archaia listed this year, but our new mother company, Kunoichi Inc, is listed as booth #949. So I'm not sure if we'll be with them this year. More details on this booth situation when I get more information from Mark Smylie next week.
I'll be selling prints, giving out stickers, and totally unsure about sketches due to hands. [This will have to be decided at the convention].
------------------
Mega-con
Feb 27th - March 1st
I’ll be in Artist Alley; Burgundy 8A section. I'll be doing the same thing [prints/stickers/etc.] at Mega-con. The cool thing about Mega-con is it's in my home town, and i'm not going to freeze to death. :) Also, you'll certainly see my best friend Ana Aesthetic in all her costumed glory stop by from time to time, and also my amazing cousin, Lindsay Cibos and her partner in crime, Jared Hodges, will be in artist alley as well. Come out to say local true-believers [Nick started my Stan Lee kick there] and say hi. :) ~And also you strange souls who actually come to Mega-con from out of town. ^_~
Showroom Hours:
Friday – 1-7pm
Saturday – 10am-6pm
Sunday – 10am-5pm
------------------
Pay-pal
If you'd like to donate some money to help me with my expenses for these conventions, it would be gladly appreciated. [i make nothing, literally.]
palpal account: witchycrankypoo@gmail.com
*note it's under my husband's account, so if you see a name of "James" in the invoice, you know why.
Thanks guys! I wish i could offer up cheap commissions right now, but i'm going to be busy for awhile. I'll try to open up something if i have the time, but no promises.
------------------
Last, but certainly not least-
The God Machine has been re-signed with Archaia Studios Press!!!
As of today, I finally got back my signed copy of my contract from the new boss man, PJ Bickett.
You're probably thinking, "What? Wasn't she signed with Archaia already?"
Answer to that is, yes I was signed. -But back in mid 2007 Archaia went through restructuring and was acquired by Kunoichi Inc. New contracts were issued to ALL talent published under Archaia, negotiations happened in length, and books were put on hold. Hence, "The God Machine" never came out for it's July/Aug/Fall debut. [You can read the restructuring further on Archaia's website.] Just this month, Archaia started releasing some of it's titles.
So, "The God Machine" is re-signed, now what?
Well, that's in my corner currently. Due to my carpal tunnel, i've held off on setting a new schedule for my comic to be released. So, as soon as I can figure out my limitations, and what I can do, the best possible release date is probably mid to late 2009.
I do apologize for all my silence, but really there were a lot of times where I was unsure of what was going to happen and didn't want to give false information until I was totally sure of the situation at hand.
Also to let you know, I'm very happy with my new contract with Archaia, and still look forward to having a long relationship with them.
------------------
So that's about it.
Also i have a new account [old actually] at blogger:
Come add me to your blog list!

Love you guys,
See you at the cons!!!
